This website has been specifically designed to be accessible to students with vision impairments. The layout and design uses a large font and high contrast by default. The quiz questions make full use of HTML's accessibility features sunch as roles and where necessary ARIA labels. For instance, each maths question has an ARIA label that converts text such as '8-2' into '8 minus 2' so the symbols are always read in a mathematically understandable way.
The game has been tested on the following platforms:
In addition, the teacher has the opportunity to indicate that a player uses a screen reader, which gives the player extra time to answer without being penalised to account for the additional time taken to hear the question.
Images are kept to a minimum and are all simple enough to be easily recognised by low vision users and have suitable alternative text for those who use screen readers. The ethos behind the alternative text is to describle the image in as few words as possible but to ensure the text captures the player's enthusiam to encourage them to keep playing.
We are always looking to improve the website, so please contact us if you notice anything that needs improving on maths@swainland.co.uk.
